The legal side of marrying in Australia is refreshingly straightforward once you know the steps. Here is the short version I share with every couple.
1. Lodge your Notice of Intended Marriage
The NOIM must be given to your celebrant at least one calendar month (and no more than 18 months) before your ceremony. I prepare this with you and check every detail.
2. Provide your documents
You will need proof of date and place of birth (birth certificate or passport) and photo ID. If either of you was previously married, we will need evidence the marriage has ended.
3. Two witnesses, over 18
On the day, two people aged 18 or older witness your marriage and sign alongside you.
4. Registration
After the ceremony, I lodge your paperwork with NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages. You can then apply for your official marriage certificate.
That's it. With the legals handled, you are free to focus on the part that matters — celebrating your love.
